Isuzu has launched the updated D-Max pickup truck at Rs 16.98 lakh (ex-showroom). Unlike before, the new lineup now consists of two models: Hi-Lander and V-Cross. The former replaces the V-Cross’s Standard variant as the new entry-level model. Importantly, a rear-wheel drivetrain has been introduced in select variants for the first time to keep prices in check.

Here are the prices:

D-Max Hi-Lander

The D-Max Hi-Lander is, for all intents and purposes, the new barebones version of the V-Cross. Gone are the chrome trims on the exterior, while the alloys have made way for steel wheels (with plastic wheel caps). On the inside, the dashboard is at best austere with only the essentials like a manual air-con, power windows, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.

The Hi-Lander gets only a manual transmission and rear-wheel drivetrain. All in all, it’s a workhorse.

Save for the engine upgrade, the D-Max V-Cross remains cosmetically unchanged. It continues with the touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, cruise control, electronically adjustable driver’s seat, 8-speaker audio (with roof-mounted speakers), alloy wheels, and bi-LED projector headlamps.

Passenger safety is taken care of by six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with camera, electronic stability control, hill descent control, and hill start assist.

Under the hood is an updated version of Isuzu’s 1.9-litre diesel engine. The now BS6-compliant motor develops 163PS and 360Nm, 13PS and 10Nm more than before. Also, it gets a new 6-speed manual gearbox, which will be sold alongside the 6-speed automatic transmission.

Select variants of the V-Cross come with a four-wheel drivetrain and a low-range gearbox. The larger 2.5-litre diesel engine has been discontinued.

Isuzu D-Max Rivals

In India, there’s no direct rival to the Isuzu D-Max. That said, for almost the same money, you can consider the Mahindra Thar, Tata Harrier, and Jeep Compass
