The MU-X will take over the reins from the MU-7 that failed to make a mark in the segment
The new Isuzu MU-X

Isuzu is all set to add a second product to its India lineup today. The MU-7 mysteriously went missing from the Japanese manufacturer’s domestic website a couple of months ago, and the MU-X will look at filling in its shoes.

The full size SUV is based on the same platform as Isuzu's popular (and desirable) pickup truck, the D-Max V-Cross. There's not much left to guess and speculate about save for the price, so let's give you a quick lowdown on what the MUX is all about.

How different is it compared to the pickup? Well, let's just say while the V-Cross is a utilitarian workhorse aimed at those who want to have a bit of fun over the weekend, the MU-X is supposed to be its posh cousin. There are three key things that will set the SUV apart from the truck –

1. Bigger Engine + Automatic Transmission

The Isuzu MU-X will be offered with a single diesel engine (at least initially) paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. A 3.0-litre, four-cylinder engine developing 177PS and 380Nm will nestle under the hood of the SUV.

2. 4x2 Option

Unlike the V-Cross that gets shift-on-the-fly 4WD as standard, the MU-X will be available in both 4x2 as well as 4x4 variants. The former could be a boon for those looking for a big family SUV with no off-roading agenda.

3. Equipment

The pickup is a fairly well equipped vehicle for its price. That said, bits such as the music system and the bedliner are optional extras. That won't be the case with the MU-X. It will be available in a single trim level and will feature quite a few feel-good features including leather upholstery, electrically adjustable driver's seat, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a roof-mounted DVD player.

At the risk of stating the obvious, the MU-X is a full-size seven seater SUV, unlike the twin-cab V-Cross that seats five. Considering the added features and the bigger engine, the MU-X will be priced at a substantial premium compared to the pickup. We expect Isuzu to price the SUV in the Rs 19 lakh to Rs 24 lakh range, which should make it a value proposition.
