Last year Isuzu launched the D-Max V-Cross to cater to a niche segment of buyers looking for a four-wheel drive pickup. Now, the company is stepping things up a notch to challenge the full-size 7-seater SUVs with the MU-X. It replaces the MU-7, which failed to make a mark on the sales charts.
The MU-X shares a lot of parts with the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which also met with a poor response and never managed to set the trails ablaze. The interiors and side profile reflect that resemblance instantly. Then how does Isuzu expect to succeed with a failed formula? With pricing. The Trailblazer, launched at Rs 26.4 lakh, with only one powertrain and drivetrain combo: a 2.8-litre diesel engine with a 6-speed automatic sending power to the rear wheels only. The MU-X, on the other hand, gets a 3.0-litre diesel engine, making 177PS of power at 3600rpm and 380Nm of torque between 1800 and 2800rpm, paired with a 5-speed automatic. Both, two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, options will be available, the car will be available with one trim option only.
The feature list of the MU-X is expected to include 6-way power-adjustable driver seat, cruise control, keyless entry with push-button start, climate control, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment, 8-speaker sound system, roof-mounted 10-inch display to entertain the rear seat occupants and projector headlamps. The MU-X has safety concerns covered with dual airbags, 4-channel ABS, stability control, traction control, disc brakes all around, three ISOFIX child seat anchors, parking sensors and a reversing camera.
The Isuzu MU-X could undercut the Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner with a price tag ranging between Rs 19 lakh and Rs 24 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
