Sure, the Tesla Model S Plaid+ ain’t happening, but the current benchmark, the Plaid can set records of its own as it is now the quickest production car on a quarter mile (0-400m) sprint. This is thanks to American TV host Jay Leno taking the silent speed demon to a drag strip near Bakersfield in the US.
Jay Leno claims the Tesla Model S Plaid managed the quarter mile sprint in just 9.247 seconds. That just about matches Tesla’s official claimed quarter-mile time of 9.23 seconds. For reference, this time beats the previous record of 9.4 seconds, set by none other than the Bugatti Chiron Sport.
The Model S Plaid comes equipped with a tri-motor electric powertrain setup (two on the rear and one on the front axle) that makes 1034PS of outright grunt distributed to all four wheels. It's already one of quickest sprinting cars in the world with a claimed 0-96kmph sprint in just 1.99 seconds, and a top speed of around 322kmph. Despite all this performance on tap, Tesla claims a decent 627km of range.
