Here’s Your First Sneak Peek Of The Jeep Commander’s Cabin

• Jeep Commander gets the same dashboard design as the Compass.
• However, it gets brown leather and suede upholstery, rose gold inserts, and suede finishing on the dash.
• Features a digital driver display, a floating infotainment system, and ambient lighting.
• Likely to come with Compass’s 2.0-litre diesel and Wrangler’s 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines.

Jeep has given us a sneak peek at the Commander's interior ahead of its debut in Brazil. For those not in the know, the Commander is essentially a 7-seater iteration of the Compass. While both models share the same dashboard design, the Commander has got some distinct touch-ups on the dash to stand apart from the Compass. 

For instance, the Commander’s brown-coloured leather and suede upholstery, with quilted stitching pattern on the seats, lends the SUV an air of luxury. Adding to the plush look and feel are the rose gold inserts in the lower centre console and suede finish on the dashboard. Also, the ‘Jeep 1941’ embossing on the front armrest harks back to the iconic Willys Jeep used in World War II. A touch of history, right there.

The teaser also offered us a glimpse of the SUV’s second and third rows. While we will hold back our comments on space and practicality, the Commander certainly seeks to pamper its middle and last-row occupants with amenities like a blower speed adjustment and charging ports. Also, while the teaser is of the bench-seat variant, a captain-seat version is expected as well. 

Other features in the SUV include a 10.25-inch digital driver display and 10.1-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system (borrowed from the Compass), steering-mounted audio controls, cruise control, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, and possibly a branded audio system.

Passenger safety should be taken care of by multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, electric parking brake, and electronic stability control. The carmaker could also offer advanced driver assistance systems similar to those in the Gloster, like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking. 

The Commander will likely utilise the Compass’s 170PS 2.0-litre diesel (possibly retuned for more power) and the Wrangler’s 268PS 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. Both motors should come with an all-wheel drive and automatic transmission. Additionally, the diesel could also get the Compass’s 6-speed MT. 

In India, the upcoming 7-seater SUV might not be called ‘Commander’, as the name has already been trademarked by Mahindra. Instead, if the latest trademarks are anything to go by, it could be named ‘Meridian’. 

The SUV will likely be priced from around Rs 35 lakh when it goes on sale in 2022. It will take on the Ford Endeavour, MG Gloster, Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra Alturas G4, Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, and the Skoda Kodiaq TSI.
