Jeep Grand Cherokee and Land Rover Discovery: Spec Comparo

The need for a powerful and brutish SUV is something that’s never ending. Jeep has just made its official entry in India and is looking forward to grabbing a piece of the booming SUV market. The American manufacturer has launched the Grand Cherokee, which was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. Now, launched at a hefty price tag of Rs 1.03 crore (ex-showroom, Delhi), the only SUV that it competes with is the Land Rover Discovery. Here is our detailed spec comparo of the two SUVs.

Dimensions:

It is all about the size when it comes to such SUVs. When it comes to the dimensions, the Discovery manages to trump the Grand Cherokee in terms of the length, breath as well as height. The former falls slightly short in terms of the wheelbase when compared with the Grand Cherokee. The Discovery can seat seven occupants, and features the complex 35:30:35 configuration for the second row. The Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, has a seating capacity of only five occupants, with a 60:40 split rear folding seat.

Engine and Transmission:

Both the SUVs are powered by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel motor. Power-output–wise, the Discovery produces 245PS compared to the Grand Cherokee’s 240PS. The Land Rover also produces 30Nm more torque than the 570Nm produced by the Grand Cherokee.

That said, transmission duties are handled by eight-speed automatic gearboxes with permanent all-wheel drive. The Jeep Grand Cherokee excels in fuel economy figures by returning 12.8kmpl as compared to the 11.36kmpl returned by the Discovery.

Features:

SUVs like these come loaded with creature comforts. The features that are shared by the Grand Cherokee and the Discovery include the Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps (DRLs), electrically heated ORVMS, and sunroof, to name a few. Draped in the finest of leathers, the seats of the SUVs come with heating function, automatic climate control, button start, rear-seat entertainment systems, touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and reverse camera, and some of the best audio systems.

Price:

Looking at the difference in prices, Jeep sells the Grand Cherokee with a price tag slightly over a crore. On the other hand, if you find the rugged, boxy and brutish looks of the Land Rover more appealing, and have the extra 17 lakh to shell out, the Discovery is your best bet.
