The Jeep Compass is off to a phenomenal start, and a lot of it has to do with its aggressive price tag. So far, Jeep’s entry-level SUV has accumulated over 10,000 bookings and has clearly exceeded everyone's expectations. The manufacturer has also received 92,000 queries from people interested in the SUV. FCA India pulled one out of the hat by launching the Compass last month with a starting price of Rs 14.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
For comparison, the Hyundai Creta achieved 10,000 bookings in 15 days since the carmaker started taking reservations and the number soared to 15,000 in 21 days. The most commendable feat, however, is that buyers were willing to put a deposit on the Creta even before the prices were announced. We're expecting the Compass to put a dent in the Creta's monthly sales figures, which otherwise hover around the 10,000 units mark. If the damage is substantial, then expect the Korean carmaker to defend its turf by further loading up the Creta with features and launching a facelift sooner than mid-2018.
About the Compass' achievement, Kevin Flynn, president and managing director of FCA, said, “The Made-in-India Jeep Compass has gained remarkable traction in the market since we opened the order books in June. Along with the incredible response to our pricing, which has been simply overwhelming, customers are also drawn to the Jeep Compass for its impressive character, sophistication, capability and authenticity. We are working with our plant to deliver the product to customers in the least possible time.”
Flynn also stated that FCA is now focussing on strengthening its sales and service network to support its customers. Mopar-driven after sales outlets are also slated to start popping up at a faster pace in the near future. In a country where every SUV with a vertical slat grille is called a Jeep, aggressive ad campaigns should help in educating customers about the real Jeep and its heritage.
The Jeep Compass is available with two engine options - a petrol and a diesel. The petrol-powered SUV gets a 1.4-litre engine coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission and is priced at Rs 14.95 lakh for the Sport trim and goes upto Rs 19.40 lakh for the Limited AT (O) variant which gets a 7-speed dual-clutch auto ‘box. The diesel variants are powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine and is priced between Rs 15.45 lakh for the Sport variant and Rs 20.65 lakh for the Limited (O) 4x4 variant.
