The Ninja 400, which is probably the only bike from Kawasaki’s stable that feels overpriced, has managed to make a comeback, and how! The 400cc supersport outsold its elder sibling, the Ninja 650, in the month of October 2019 thanks to Kawasaki’s festive season offers on its CKD and SKD motorcycles called ‘Boost Up Vouchers’.
Under this offer, the Ninja 400 received a discount of Rs 58,950 which brought its price down to Rs 4.4 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). And the result speaks for itself -- Kawasaki sold 36 units in October when compared to just one in the corresponding month last year. That’s a whopping 3,500 per cent growth over the preceding year. And no, that’s not a typo. It just goes to show that a good product with the right pricing will always find takers in a price conscious market like outs. Kawasaki, we hope you’re listening.
The Ninja 650’s sales, on the other hand, stumbled from 77 units in October last year to just 32 units last month despite the discount offer. That amounts to a 58 per cent drop in its sales. However, the decline could be attributed to various reasons - one of them being the transition to BS6 vehicles. The second reason could be the introduction of the new Kawasaki Ninja 650, which is expected to be launched in India next year. Why shell out your hard-earned money on an older model when you have a new one coming along, right?
All said and done, the Ninja 400’s impressive sales run may not last long due to its original pricing, which we’re afraid is a little too steep for a 400cc motorcycle. Do you agree with us? Let us know in the comments section below.
