The electric vehicle (EV) segment is currently on the rise in the Indian market. Recently, Tata Motors rolled out the 1,000th Nexon EV and it’s a sign that the EV space is growing despite the poor charging network in the country. One manufacturer that could soon tap this segment is Kia Motors.
While the Sonet’s platform is ready for electrification, it is unlikely that Kia will make its debut with an entry-level EV. Yes, the Sonet EV could give sleepless nights to the Nexon EV and churn out enough volume. Instead, the Korean giant could start its EV innings with a premium SUV that will lock horns with the Hyundai Kona and MG ZS EV. Although Kia hasn’t revealed any details about its upcoming electric vehicle, chances are it could be the Soul EV that was showcased at Auto Expo 2020.
The Soul utilises the same powertrain and 39.2kWh battery pack as the Kona Electric and looks more funky than the Hyundai. In typical Kia fashion, the Soul EV will pack premium features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, ventilated seats, a premium sound system and connected car technology.
Fun fact. Before the Seltos made it to the production line, Kia distributed a few EVs, including the Soul EV, to the Telangana government as part of its MoU with the state to develop electric mobility. These EVs are still in use today.
While it’s natural for any new carmaker to focus its energy on ICE-powered cars in a country like ours, the EV segment is growing at a rapid pace in the country. This could lead to Kia introducing an EV in the country sooner than later. Expect Kia’s first EV to be priced around Rs 22 lakh, putting it in the same ballpark as Hyundai’s Kona Electric and MG’s ZS EV.
