When it comes to outrageousness, nothing trumps Lamborghini, that is a fact. Many have tried and succeeded only to be put back into their place again. It seems Lamborghini has done it yet again, this time with the Terzo Millennio, which literally translates to Third Millennium. The Terzo Millennio has been developed using the Italian marquee’s forged composite technology and in collaboration with one of the world’s premier technology institutes, MIT in Boston. The partnership was aimed at building something that would simply rewrite the rules of the super sports cars and hence, the insane Terzo Millennio was born.
The Terzo Millennio is as much a technology exercise as it is a design one. But let’s start with the design. For one, the Terzo is unmistakably a Lamborghini, especially when looked at from the side. It’s sharp and sleek with fins and scoops running everywhere. The front white LED lights make it look like a scalpel on wheels that is designed to cut through the air with minimal resistance. The front of the car is edgy and almost evil looking. The waterfall windshield and LED lamps make it look like the sort of car Rick Deckard would drive.
As for the tech, it is as bonkers as the design. Lamborghini has forged a three-year partnership with MIT and will be working closely with its students and professors to come up with alternative ways to propel the car electrically. Not sure you follow? Well, the Terzo is a box of ideas as of now. Lamborghini attempts to do away with the lithium-ion batteries once and for all. It is looking to make use of supercapacitors in a way that they release and collect energy simultaneously. The stored energy will be sent to electric motors mounted on all four wheels. The company also wants to develop a new electrical system based on carbon-fibre nanotubes that will run throughout the car and act as the power supply.
Other revolutionary ideas on the table are self-healing materials (we swear, we are not making this up). The idea is to enable the car to detect any cracks or minor gaps that might have appeared on the body and utilise the nanotubes to supply ‘healing chemistries’ to fill up the said cracks. It is kind of like a tooth filling, just with carbon-fibre.
The Terzo will also be an autonomous vehicle, but not in the traditional way. Yes, it will be able to handle all duties in and around town but what it’s really meant to do is show the driver the fastest way around a racetrack, the entry and exit points, corner speeds and the correct racing lines. Another aspect the company intends to work on is the sound, though there isn’t a clear picture pertaining to the acoustics, it will no doubt be mesmerising.
Lastly, the partnership is due to last three years between the two giants with each year allocated to specific targets. Even if the partnership comes to fruition, it is unlikely that Lamborghini will make a swift move to electrification. What will we get to see in the near future from the maddest car company in the world, we’ll just have to wait and watch. But until then we can take comfort in the fact that Lamborghini will continue to make the ultimate poster-worthy cars.
