Amid a scramble for total electrification in the automotive industry, established carmakers have begun to gradually phase out their entire internal combustion engine lineups. But not Lotus. The British carmaker has planned a swansong for ICEs, teasing the Emira, the upcoming sports car that will debut globally on July 6 2021.
While the teaser doesn’t divulge a lot of details, the England-based carmaker said that the Emira’s design has been inspired by the all-electric Evija hypercar. And that is evident right off the bat, with a unique headlight setup and aggressively arched front fenders. The shape of the rear end, from what we can fathom from the shots, should aid aerodynamic efficiency.
We don’t know really what would be under the hood, but that it would get multiple internal combustion engine options is confirmed. This engine lineup will include what Lotus claims a ‘highly efficient’ unit that will be specifically tuned to deliver that distinct Lotus experience.
The Emira will be Lotus’ sole remaining internal combustion-engine model in its lineup after the carmaker ends production of the Elise, Exige and Evora at the end of 2021. And Lotus won’t be going the hybrid route. Instead it will transition straight to all-electric propulsion for its future vehicles. Currently, the Evija hypercar is Lotus’s sole EV, that has jaw-dropping claimed performance figures of 2,000PS power and 1,700Nm torque.
