The brand will introduce an e-scooter based on the Gusto in early-2020
  • It could make its debut before the 2020 Auto Expo.
  • Expect a price of around Rs 80,000 (after Fame II subsidies).
  • Range will be around the 80km mark.
  • The electric two-wheeler space in India is growing rapidly, with more players getting involved almost every day. The latest in this long line is Mahindra, who has plans to introduce an electric scooter in early-2020. Some sources believe the brand might even show the scooter before the 2020 Auto Expo. It has apparently been under development since 2017 and is believed to have already received ARAI certification, so an unveil should be just around the corner.

It will be based on Mahindra’s petrol-powered Gusto scooter, but will be powered by an electric motor rated at around 3kW. This should allow it to achieve a top speed of about 55-60kmph, while the range is expected to be in the range of (pun intended) 80km. Mahindra already manufactures e-scooters at its Pithampur plant for French subsidiary Peugeot, and the e-Ludix is already being exported to Europe. This e-scooter uses a removable lithium-ion battery pack and the upcoming Gusto electric could employ similar technology.

The Hero Group has had its Hero Electric subsidiary for a while now; Bajaj is very close to launching the Chetak; Suzuki is developing an e-scooter and now, Mahindra will soon enter the market as well. The electric revolution might have started off with smaller manufacturers and startups, but bigger manufacturers have been taking notice and are now starting to take the plunge themselves too. Interesting times lie ahead.
