At the 2018 Formula E Rome E-Prix, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd announced the launch of Automobili Pininfarina post its acquisition of Pininfarina SpA back in 2015. Automobili Pininfarina is a project that uses motorsport technologies from the Mahindra Racing team in Formula-E to create luxurious EVs. And now, the two entities have announced that this technical partnership will be strengthened even further.
The partnership between the two companies will now cover programmes and components like simulations, energy use, composites, powertrains, and cooling systems. Other areas of sharing resources will include wind tunnel work as well as suppliers and personnel, including Mahindra Racing Formula E’s race drivers - Pascal Wherlein and Jerome D'ambrosio. Currently, former Mahindra Racing driver Nick Heidfeld is carrying out development driver duties with Automobili Pininfarina.
The Mahindra Racing team has had a long and fruitful history in the the FIA ABB Formula-E Championship, being the only Indian team on the grid. It has had plenty of success with multiple podiums and wins that started at the Berlin E-Prix in 2017. It is also the only Formula-E team to be awarded the FIA Environmental Accreditation Two-Star rating. Mahindra Racing will be back in action on February 29 at the Marrakesh E-Prix for the fifth round of the championship. Meanwhile, Automobili Pininfarina will is set to take part in the 2020 Geneva Motor Show that commences on March 3.
