Update 14/02/2019: The Mahindra XUV300 has been launched at Rs 7.90 lakh, ex-showroom India. Here's why it is priced at a premium as compared to the Brezza, Nexon and EcoSport.
Mahindra’s upcoming electric SUV to be codenamed S210
The SUV will be an electrified version of the XUV300
It will be launched in mid-2020
It will likely be pegged as a smaller and more affordable alternative to the upcoming Hyundai Kona EV
Will be a sub-4 metre SUV
Will be the first product to incorporate Korean-made lithium-ion batteries
Mahindra had quite a day planned for the press today. The Indian carmaker not only announced the name of its upcoming Ssangyong Tivoli-based SUV, but released the images of the XUV300 as well. In addition to this, the company also announced its plans of bringing an electric SUV to India as well.
Codenamed the S210, it will be an electrified version of the XUV300. It will make its debut by mid-2020 and will be the first product by Mahindra to employ Korean battery technology as the carmaker has already tied up with LG Chem to develop Li-ion battery tech for its cars. Although this could drive up the cost of the vehicle, the all-electric XUV300 will be a sub-4 metre offering, just like the XUV300. Mahindra is expected to develop two versions of the S210 with two range offerings. One is likely to be positioned as a city car while the other will have an extended range to help tackle long distances and could even be performance oriented. Mahindra also said that it is looking at developing battery tech to alleviate range anxiety. As for pricing, expect it to be pegged as a more affordable alternative to the Hyundai Kona EV. It is likely to sit right between the Mahindra e2o and the Hyundai Kona EV.
We expect the S210 to be similar to the XUV300 in terms of dimensions and cabin space. It should also offer similar convenience and safety equipment as the XUV300. These include a large infotainment system, maybe an all-digital instrument cluster, rear parking sensors with reversing camera, seven airbags and ABS with EBD as standard. Mahindra could offer some active driver aids as well and it is highly likely that they will be exclusive to the electric SUV.
