Before the BS6 emissions norms kicked in, the XUV500 was offered with a 2.2-litre turbo-petrol engine belting out 140PS and 320Nm. The XUV700 now comes with a smaller 2-litre turbo-petrol unit. However, it puts out 60PS and 60Nm more than the XUV500’s motor.

Also, the XUV700 can be had with both manual and automatic transmission (will be launched soon) options compared to the XUV500. But considering the newer engine’s performance on tap, the claimed fuel efficiency could be much lesser than the XUV500’s unit.

The power and torque outputs of the XUV700’s base-spec MX diesel and the XUV500 are exactly the same. It’s just that the former can be had with only a manual while the latter also gets an automatic transmission.

However, if you opt for the AdrenoX (AX) trim, which will be launched soon, the XUV700’s 2.2-litre diesel engine puts out 30PS and up to 90Nm more torque than the XUV500. This version of the XUV700’s engine will be offered with manual and automatic as well as front-wheel and all-wheel drivetrains.

That said, the XUV500 was also offered with an all-wheel drivetrain until the BS6 norms kicked off in April 2020.

It looks like Mahindra could repeat another XUV500 with the XUV700. With such aggressive prices, the XUV700 not only has the capability to the Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus, and Tata Safari, but it could be a potential threat to smaller SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Skoda Kushaq, and the upcoming VW Taigun
