Maruti Suzuki has announced a new sales landmark. Its sub-4 metre SUV, the Vitara Brezza, has crossed the 5 lakh sales milestone since its launch 47 months ago. The carmaker claims that this is the quickest any SUV has sold in India. Maruti Suzuki will showcase the Vitara Brezza facelift at Auto Expo 2020. Expect it to be priced higher than the current SUV which is priced from Rs 7.63 lakh to 10.60 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
The Vitara Brezza has topped the SUV sales charts for several months in India. One look at the sales figures tells you that it has sold over 10,000 units monthly over the last four months. Shashank Srivastava, the Executive Director of Marketing & Sales, said, ”Vitara Brezza gained immense popularity within months of its launch. Designed and developed by the team at Maruti Suzuki using Suzuki core technology, Vitara Brezza struck the right chord with Indian customers.”
Since its launch, the Vitara Brezza has been offered with a torquey and frugal 1.3-litre diesel engine. Maruti is not likely to update this engine to comply with BS6 regulations. It will instead plonk a 1.5-litre petrol engine, the K15, in the facelifted Brezza. This change will make the Brezza a bit more expensive as it may no longer comply with sub-4 metre car regulations in India.

Maruti Suzuki’s Vitara Brezza was the brand’s first SUV to become a sales hit since the Gypsy. It was the right car at the right time. It rivals the Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and the Mahindra XUV300. How will things change after the BS6 norms kick in? Will Maruti’s SUV still woo buyers who prefer diesel efficiency?
