The GranCabrio is Maserati's ultimate style-statement, and a hat-tip to the quintessential Italian picture of driving in the Tuscan sun

Henry Ford was once looked down upon in Detroit, for he was often spotted driving around in a Maserati Ghibli Spyder. The inventor of the modern car always had the perfect defence for his peers at Ford – “The Ghibli will disappear from my parking space only when you have designed me a Ford that is just as good looking. Through the ages, be it the 2000 Frua Spyder or the more modern and manic Mistral from the 60s, the drop-tops have often been the cars through which the real passion of famed Italian coachbuilders has shone through. The GranCabrio is the 21st century’s reply to the same line of thought.

While on the surface it is merely a topless version of the GranTurismo, the GranCabrio plays a significant role in completing Maserati’s image as an Italian carmaker dripping with style and panache. With the same sharp driving dynamics that characterize its cousins, the GranCabrio is a fantastic driving machine too. It also holds the distinction of being the Trident’s first cabriolet with four seats – possibly a sign of the changing times. But that separates the GranCabrio from its European competition as a serious car for a ton of fun.
