The Ghibli will be the first car to receive the update, in this case a greener hybrid powertrain
  • An all-electric sports car promising the trademark Maserati DNA is under development.
  • A new utility vehicle is also under development, with unveil set for 2021.
  • Maserati also exploring autonomous driving tech across its portfolio.

Like almost all major manufacturers today, Maserati is joining the electric race. The Italian luxury specialist has announced a detailed roadmap for its future portfolio consisting of hybrid and electric vehicles. This roadmap falls under the FCA Group’s €5 billion investment program and all the vehicles will be built in Italy.

The first green product from the Italian carmaker to hit roads will be the entry-level Ghibli. It will come with a hybrid powertrain and development will happen in Turin, Italy. Technical specifications haven’t been revealed yet but we expect it to be as powerful as the 275PS 3.0-litre diesel variant that’s currently available with the Ghibli.

Another exciting news from the carmaker is an all-new, all-electric sports car. The yet-to-be named model will be produced at Modena, Italy, and the carmaker promises that it will be as fun to drive as traditional Maseratis. The manufacturer has also started work to accommodate a new production line at its Modena plant for the production of its electric powertrain. The carmaker’s flagship models, the Gran-Turismo and Grand Cabrio, will also come with an all-electric powertrain.

Up next is a new utility vehicle for which a hefty €800 million has been invested into a new production line at Cassino. In fact, the production line is slated to open by mid-2020 and the first prototypes are expected to be ready by 2021. Maserati also added that this model will have cutting edge technology which brings us to…

… the carmaker’s ideas in the field of autonomous driving. The carmaker said that all new and updated models will come with autonomous driving technology in Level 2 and Level 3 forms. Level 2 will involve highway assist while the next level involves hands-off driving with maneuvering in lanes. Level 3 can also bring the vehicle to a stop if anything untoward happens.

Apart from that, Maserati will be updating its current Maserati range which consists of the Levante and Quattroporte apart from the Ghibli.
