After just 375 units, McLaren has officially stopped production of the revered P1. The last model has already rolled off the line, although there still will be some more limited edition McLaren P1 GTRs - track-only version of the P1 - in the pipeline. Sales of the McLaren P1 ended in late 2013, mere months after the $2 million dollar supercar, or hypercar, if you will, first went on sale to only the most well-heeled of buyers.
The last McLaren P1 is finished in pearlescent orange with the only visible raw carbon fibre on the splitter, diffuser and the aerodynamic blades along the lower body. The wheels are finished in silver. Inside, the bespoke touches are crystal clear. The 375th P1 gets gloss black detailing for the switchgear, instrument bezels and air conditioning vents. The carbon fibre-shelled racing seats are upholstered in black and orange Alcantara.
The P1 is powered by a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8, paired to an electric motor. Together, they produce a touch more than 900 PS, enough to get the P1 from 0 to 100 kmph in 2.8 seconds, and on to a claimed top speed of 350 kmph. The electric motor is also used to fill gaps in the V8’s torque curve, providing smoother and more consistent acceleration.
As of now, McLaren have built 13 “eXperimental” prototype models, 5 validation prototypes, 3 pre-production cars and 375 production units of the P1. Each P1 has taken up 800 hours of production time with 105 employees involved in each build. On top of this, each car received between 5 and 8 litre of base coat and 8-9 litres of lacquer depending upon the colour.
As for the future, McLaren isn’t offering any details on a direct successor to its halo hypercar yet, but it has at least reaffirmed plans for more hybrid models down the road.
