Mercedes-AMG ushered in a new era of sorts at the 2021 Munich Motor Show, unveiling its first all-electric offering, the EQS 53. In classic AMG fashion, the carmaker has added performance-focused upgrades to the flagship EQS electric sedan.
In this report, we have compiled five important things you want to know about the EQS53 EV:
More Grunt
The EQS 53 uses a twin-electric motor and the carmaker’s 4MATIC+ all-wheel setup to belt out 658PS and 950Nm. That’s a step up of 135PS and 94Nm over the EQS 580 4MATIC. Add to it the AMG Dynamic Plus pack, and the output figures jump to 761PS and 1020Nm. All of this translates to a 0-100kmph sprint time of just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 250kmph when using the optional performance package.
Performance Trickery
Mercedes-AMG has also tinkered with the sub frame, control arms, dampers, and air suspension to handle corners better than before. The EV comes with a 9-degree rear-wheel steering as standard. Stopping power is courtesy of a six-piston AMG-specific braking system, which can be upgraded to ceramic brakes with larger discs. Five drive modes are on offer: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual.
Range?
While the carmaker hasn’t divulged range figures, the EQS 53 gets the same 107.8kWh battery pack as the standard model. But, with the additional performance, don’t expect it to be as efficient as the regular sedan, which delivers a WLTP-claimed 770km. Maximum fast charging of up to 200kW can be used, and the EV can return up to 300km in just 19 minutes.
Sportier Exterior
As is the case with AMG models, the EQS 53 gets sportier styling, thanks to its chrome-slatted front panel, tweaks to the bumpers, a larger rear spoiler, and 21-inch alloy wheels.
Bolder Cabin
Inside, there’s a flat-bottom AMG steering wheel, sportier seats, sports pedals, and red stitching on the upholstery. In addition, the AMG EQS 53 4Matic+ retains the MBUX Hyperscreen setup.
Here in India, we expect the standard EQS first before the AMG trim, which could happen sometime in 2022. The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 is an alternative to other performance EVs like the Audi RS e-tron GT as well as the Porsche Taycan Turbo S.
