With the launch of the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe, the carmaker touched the double-digit landmark. Mercedes is on its way to having a dozen AMG cars on sale in India as it prepares to launch the green monster, GT R, and the convertible, GT Roadster.
The GT R is the crazier twin of the GT S. Although it shares the same powertrain and the 7-speed dual clutch transmission as the GT S, it's quicker to touch the 100kmph mark from nought by two-tenths of a second. The 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 makes 585PS and 700Nm and accelerates to 100kmph in 3.6 seconds. That's 75PS and 50Nm more than the GT S. The beast is the fastest front-engined rear-wheel drive car around the Nurburgring track with a lap time of 7:10.92.
The big carbon fibre wing around the back of the GT R isn't completely rigid. In Race mode it gets closer to the car by 40mm, adding 40kg of weight on the rear axles using nothing but thin air. Replacing the twin exhaust ports of the GT S is a new exhaust system with three outlets — one large hexagonal socket in the centre and two more hiding on either side in the diffusers.
More power and extra bragging rights mean it's going to be costlier than the GT S, which is priced at Rs 2.09 crore (ex-showroom). We're expecting the GT R to cost somewhere close to Rs 3 crore. At this rate, it can take on the Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2 and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S.
The GT Roadster goes topless to define the term 'roadster'. Two seats, a long bonnet, front-mid engine layout, rear wheel drive and the wind rushing through your hair when you drive, the GT Roadster has it all. The GT Roadster is for those who don't obsess over the power figures and want the top-down motoring experience in the twisties. The 4.0-litre twin turbo motor here makes 476PS and 630Nm, enough to exploit most of what the car offers without hitting the track.
The GT Roadster is expected to carry a price tag of around Rs 2.5 crore. It'll compete against the Maserati Gran Cabrio, Jaguar F-Type Convertible, Ferrari California T, Lamborghini Huracan RWD Spyder and the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet.
