Mercedes has brought 'The Beast From Green Hell' to India and we are loving it. Two new variants of the AMG GT range have been launched in India and the prices for the AMG GT R start from Rs 2.23 crore while the AMG GT Roadster begins from Rs 2.19 crore (ex-showroom, India). Where the Mercedes AMG GT R has been developed on a racetrack and is meant to go as fast as possible under every condition, the GT Roadster is a chilled-out drop-top cruiser which won't trouble your neighbours, much.
Starting with the Green Goblin, the AMG GT R uses the same direct injection, twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 from the GT S, but has been tuned to produce a massive 585PS of power and 700Nm of twisting force (75PS/50Nm more than the GT S). Mated to the AMG 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the R takes just 3.6 seconds to reach triple-digit speeds and can go all the way to the 318kmph. The same mill in the AMG GT Roadster produces 476PS of power and 630Nm of peak torque. Mated to the same transmission, the Roadster takes 4.0 seconds to reach 100kmph and has a top speed of 302kmph. Now, if you are eager to know the mileage of these beasts, then it's evident that you can't afford them, so why bother.
The Mercedes AMG GT R is loaded with tech. Boffins with white lab coats in Affalterbach gave the GT R's underbody a carbon fibre component, which at a speed of 80kmph moves downward by about 40 millimetres and changes the airflow. This "sucks" the car onto the road and reduces the front axle lift by around 40 kilograms at 250 kmph, so that, you know, the car doesn't end up in the stratosphere. The new aluminium side walls make the AMG GT R 57mm wider, helping it accommodate wider 20-inch wheels for more grip. And things do not end there -- the AMG GT R gets rear-wheel steering as well so you can carry the additional speed into corners. With all of this additional tech, the car is bound to get heavier, right? Wrong, the AMG GT R is 15 kilograms lighter than the AMG GT S thanks to components like the carbon fibre wing, roof and torque tube which weighs just 13.9 kilograms, 40 per cent lighter than the GT S.
Where the R is performance-focused, the Roadster lets you cruise across the countryside with the wind in your hair and the sound of the engine in your ears. The fabric roof takes about 11 seconds to fully deploy or fold and can do this at speeds up to 50kmph.
Both of these models add to the Mercedes AMG GT lineup which till today only had the S. The AMG GT R will go up against the Jaguar F-Type and the Porsche 911 GT3 whereas the GT Roadster will rival their open-top counterparts.
