It is powered by the same 4.0-litre twin turbo as the AMG GT S, but tweaked for more power, and also gets carbon fibre parts along with aerodynamic enhancements.

Mercedes launched its flagship sports car, the AMG GT S, last year and it replaced the legendary gull-winged SLS AMG. The AMG GT S produces 510PS of power along with 650Nm of torque. Sounds like a lot of power right? Well, the folks at Affalterbach are taking the definition of lunacy to a whole new level with an even faster, track-oriented version of the AMG GT S, called the AMG GT R.

It will come with a revised inlet manifold, added boost pressure, revised gear ratios and a free flowing titanium exhaust system - all these translate into a mental power figure which will be just shy of 600PS! Even the AMG-spec seven-speed dual clutch gearbox has been further strengthened to harness all the added power.

Mercedes will showcase this hooligan at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed in June this year as the AMG GT R has been listed by Michelin for the festival’s Supercar Paddock event.

The AMG GT R will share a lot with the GT3 race car that was unveiled by Mercedes at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. To make the car more aerodynamic, it will come with a reworked bumper, carbon-fibre rear wing and a new Panamericana front grille similar to the GT3 race car.

The bonnet, boot lid and the wings are all made up of carbon-fibre which has resulted in a weight saving of around 60 kilograms. It is expected to be launched in global markets by 2017 and its closest competitor will be the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
