Mercedes-Benz has added a more affordable diesel to its long-wheelbase E-Class range with a price tag of Rs 57.14 lakh, ex-showroom, Pune. This new diesel - the E 220 d slots under the top end diesel E 350 d which makes it a more lucrative choice for buyers looking for a purely chauffeur-driven sedan. The E-Class available in India is the long wheelbase version and is ideal for the rear seat experience. Mercedes also say that the cost of ownership of the E 220 d will be the lowest in the E-Class range and the service packages for the E 220 d start from Rs 76,600 for two years. Feature wise, it is on par with the petrol variant.
The E 220 d is powered by Mercedes' first all-aluminium 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine. It produces 194PS of power and 400Nm of torque, bringing it at par with its two-litre diesel engine rivals in the segment. Transmission duties are handled by a 9-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels. This engine lets the E-Class reach triple digit speeds from a standstill in 7.8seconds and go all the way up to a top speed of 240kmph. The bigger diesel in the portfolio is a 3.0-litre V6 which makes a hefty 258PS/620Nm and the petrol is a 2.0-litre motor which has an output of 184PS/300Nm. Despite the massive deficit in power as compared to the bigger diesel motor, the new E 220 d is perfect for someone looking to be seated at the rear seats and going through presentations while the chauffeur tackles the daily traffic. Also, not to mention, the smaller diesel is more efficient as well.
The E-Class is the only car in its segment to come in the extended wheelbase avatar. It is longer by 186mm compared to the standard sedan, which means you can sit back and stretch your legs after a hectic day at work. To keep you comfortable and entertained inside the cabin, The E 220 d, like its other E-class siblings, gets reclining rear seats, ambient lighting, 12.3-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and a panoramic sunroof. However compared to its more expensive sibling, the 220 d doesn't get air suspension nor memory function for front seats or the Burmester sound system . But you do however get the Chauffeur package which includes easy electrically movable front passenger seat from the rear, rear head restraint adjustment and electrically extendable footrest.
The E 220 d will primarily rival the Audi A6, the BMW 5 Series and the Volvo S90 in the market, with the Beemer due for an update next month. Stay tuned to ZigWheels for an in-depth review of the E 220 d.
