The EQA made its debut in concept form at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show

  • Features a similar roofline to the GLA SUV.
  • Could get EQ style elements such as a closed-off grille as well as unique front and rear lighting.
  • Likely to feature similar technical specifications as the EQA concept.
  • Part of the carmaker’s plans to introduce 10 EQ models by 2022.
  • Will rival the likes of the BMW i3 once launched.

While Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled its taller and wider 2020 GLA SUV, the carmaker also gave us a sneak peek of its future electric EQ models. A teaser of the upcoming EQA was revealed that sports a design different from the hatchback stance of the concept iteration showcased at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The teaser image reveals that the EQA bears a resemblance to the GLA with bits like a high roofline. Despite that, we expect the carmaker to add some signature EQ elements such as a closed-off grille similar to the EQC SUV as well as unique front and rear lighting.

Technical specifications of the EQA are yet to be revealed, however we do know that the EQA concept is powered by two electric motors  delivering a combined total of 271PS and 499Nm. All this power is distributed to all four wheels via an all-wheel drive system. It also gets nifty performance gizmos like the ‘Sports’ mode that alters torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. Going into range capacity, the carmaker claims 400km on a single charge. The EQA concept also benefits from fast charging technology, which gives a 100km range charge in ten minutes. Expect the production spec EQA to sport similar technical specifications.

Post the EQC SUV, the next slated EQ model for Mercedes-Benz is the EQB which is based on the GLB. The EQA is part of the carmakers plans to bring in 10 EQ branded models by 2022. Besides introducing EVs, the carmaker is also planning on developing more charging solutions via its investment in ChargePoint, an EV charging provider in America. Expect the EQA to take on the BMW i3 once launched in international markets.
