Mercedes-Benz has been on a roll lately. Not only has it restructured its product line-up, but has also turned its cars into something special. This is why today we talk about the new E-Class coupe, which tries to bring that x-factor to the rather sedate E-Class family. To that end, not only does it look fresh, it also has grown in terms of size (compared to its predecessor) and has an all-new four-cylinder diesel engine too. So, let's dive right into what makes the E-Class coupe worth your time.
The E-Class coupe looks quite different from its sedan cousin. To that end, it has new headlamps, a new grille, a different set of wheels, and new ‘trick’ LED taillights. The new taillights are inspired by those on the S-Class coupe. The trick we talked about happens when you lock/unlock the car. Upon unlocking the car, the taillights illuminate outwards from the centre and the opposite when you lock the car. The headlights play a similar trick too.
Quickly diving into the mechanical bits, the car has four variants – E220d (diesel), E200, E300, and E400 4Matic. Barring the last one, the rest are powered by 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, with different power and torque outputs, depending on the variant. The E400 4Matic is the top variant and, hence, it gets a 3.0-litre V6 engine. Below is a breakdown of the engine specs of each variant:
Parameter | E220d | E200 | E300 | E400 4Matic |
Engine | 2.0-litre inline-four cylinder diesel | 2.0-litre inline-four cylinder petrol | 2.0-litre inline-four cylinder petrol | 3.0-litre V6 petrol |
Power (PS) | 194 | 184 | 245 | 333 |
Torque (Nm) | 400 | 300 | 370 | 480 |
Transmission | Nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic | Nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic | Nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic | Nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic |
Acceleration (0-100kmph) | 7.4 seconds | 7.8 seconds | 6.4 seconds | 5.3 seconds |
Top Speed | 242 kmph | 240 kmph | 250 kmph | 250 kmph |
As far as the size is concerned, this is how much the new E-Class coupe has grown in size in comparison to the outgoing car:
Parameter | New E-Class Coupe | Outgoing car |
Length | 4,826 mm | 4,703 mm |
Width | 1,860 mm | 1,786 mm |
Height | 1,430 mm | 1,398 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,873 mm | 2,760 mm |
Legroom (rear) | 912 mm | 838 mm |
Headroom (front/rear) | 1,039 mm/925 mm | 1,021 mm/910 mm |
Shoulder room (front/rear) | 1,424 mm/1,277 mm | 1,373 mm/1,243 mm |
In terms of changes made to the coupe in comparison to the sedan, the two-door E-Class' suspension has been lowered by 15mm. Also, the suspension can be adjusted, for which there are three modes – Comfort, Sport and Sport+. The E-Class coupe can also be optioned with air suspension. In addition to the three modes offered by standard suspension, this set-up brings with it an additional 'Individual' mode to help the driver configure the system to his/her own liking.
Among the features of the new E-Class coupe are Mercedes' own COMAND infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, integrated hotspot, live traffic information in the onboard navigation system, active brake assist, Drive Pilot and Remote Parking Pilot technologies. The Drive Pilot technology helps the E-Class coupe maintain its distance from the car in front on all road types up to speeds of 210kmph. The Remote Parking Pilot technology helps the user move the car in and out of his/her garage and parking spaces remotely via a smartphone app.
The new E-Class coupe is definitely a car to look out for. While we do not know when Mercedes-Benz will bring it to India or with what features, we sure do hope it does so soon. This is one car that has all the ingredients to not just be sporty but also be usable on a daily basis. Will it deliver on both these aspects? Stay tuned as we find out and bring you the latest on the E-Class coupe, only on ZigWheels.
