While we were awaiting a complete facelift to the MG Astor after the same has been revealed globally, MG was rather surprised with a Model year update to the existing model. The Astor is offered in six variants: Sprint, Shine, Select, Sharp Pro and Savvy Pro.
This update just focuses on a few added features like the sunroof, added speakers, six airbags and ivory leatherette seats that have been rolled down from its higher trims particularly to the Shine and Select variants, hence making them more accessible for buyers. So if you are an MG fan or maybe looking for the Astor, here’s a quick look at all that you get with the compact SUV:
The updates are done to the one-above-base Shine and the mid-spec Select variant. The Shine variant which earlier didn’t get a sunroof and had four speakers now gets a panoramic sunroof and six speakers which was earlier available starting from the Select trim.
On the other hand, the Select variant gets six airbags and Ivory-themed leatherette seats both of which were earlier available from the one below top Sharp Pro variant.
The MG Astor in its top-spec variant comes with features like a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch digital driver’s display, ventilated front seats, auto-dimming IRVM, a wireless phone charger, a 6-way powered driver seat, automatic climate control and connected car tech alongside a panoramic sunroof and six speakers.
Besides six airbags, other safety features include ABS with EBD, electronic stability control (ESC), a 360-degree camera, traction control, hill hold/descent control and Level-2 ADAS features.
It continues to be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 110 PS and 144 Nm or a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine that delivers 140 PS and 220 Nm. The former gets mated with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT while the turbo petrol engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic.
Variants |
Price (ex-showroom) |
Sprint |
Rs 10 lakh |
Shine |
Rs 12.47 lakh |
Select |
Rs 13.82 lakh to Rs 14.85 lakh |
Sharp Pro |
Rs 15.21 lakh to Rs 16.49 lakh |
Savvy Pro |
Rs 17.46 lakh to Rs 18.35 lakh |
The Shine trim in its petrol manual variant now commands a premium of Rs 36,000 while the Select variant is up to Rs 38,000 more expensive now.
The MG Astor competes with the likes of Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Toyota Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, Citroen Basalt and C3 Aircross.

This move seems aimed at making the MG Astor a more appealing choice for buyers. However, we believe that a proper facelift and design overhaul would have been more effective in achieving the same goal. That said, whether the lower variants with added features will attract more buyers remains to be seen over time.
What’s your take on this? Would you consider buying an MG Astor now? If so, which variant would you choose?
