MG Motor India is gearing up to launch the Gloster, its fourth SUV in the country. We recently drove the Gloster and were quite impressed. Now you can also check it out yourself as it has started reaching showrooms ahead of its mid-October launch, though test drives are likely to begin post the price announcement as hinted by our dealer sources.
Pre-launch bookings for the Gloster are open for a token amount of Rs 1 lakh and you can reserve one either at a dealership or via the official website. The Gloster will be offered in four variants: Super, Sharp, Smart and Savvy. It will come in two seating layouts: a 6-seater with captain seats for the middle row and a 7-seater with bench seats. The Gloster’s appeal lies in its XXL size. Indians like big SUVs especially when they are paying big money for it and the Gloster does well in this regard. In fact, it’s the largest SUV in its segment. Even the interior design is premium, though we must admit it’s influenced by BMWs. In true MG fashion, the Gloster comes with a super long list of features. Highlights include a 12.3-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connected car technology, a 12-speaker sound system, a panoramic sunroof, powered front seats with ventilation and heating functions, massage function for the driver seat, and a powered tailgate. It’s also the only SUV in its segment to come with level 1 autonomous driving features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, a blind spot monitor, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking and park assist.
The Gloster will be offered with two diesel engine options, both displacing 2.0-litres. The lower-spec variants come with a single turbo version that develops 163PS and 375Nm while the higher variants utilise a more powerful twin-turbo version churning out 218PS and 480Nm. While both engines are offered with an 8-speed automatic transmission, it’s the latter that comes with an all-wheel-drive system.
Prices for the Gloster are likely to begin from Rs 35 lakh and could go up to Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom). It will fight it out with the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and Mahindra Alturas G4.
