Our sources close to Mahindra have confirmed that the company is working on a more powerful version of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine for the XUV500. The engine currently develops 140PS of power at 3750rpm and 330Nm of torque between 1600 and 2800rpm. Mahindra engineers are aiming for a target figure of 170PS for power and 350-360Nm for torque. A boost of 30 units in power and torque will be noticeable in everyday use and make the SUV a serious contender despite its age. The updated XUV500 is expected to hit showrooms around the 2017 festive season.
Squeezing more power will also make it competent next to the Toyota Innova Crysta and the Tata Hexa. Both these cars make more power and torque than the XUV500. The next generation, however, is not even in sight. According to our source, the completely revamped XUV500 is "at least two years away" from making an entrance. After spending its fair share of time on computers and boardroom tables, the XUV Aero is also said to have earned its approvals. Mahindra may showcase the 5-seater SUV coupe at the upcoming 2018 Auto Expo.
The XUV is proof that you can make a splash in the industry even without prior experience in making pricey products. Buyers reward carmakers when they offer the right mix of style, performance, features, refinement and pricing.
It started its journey in 2011 and received a mid-life update in 2015. The XUV500 is currently available in four trims. An automatic transmission is available in the top three variants, all-wheel drive is offered in the top two trims while a combination of the two is reserved for the top spec only. The range starts at Rs 12.49 lakh for the W4 variant and tops out at Rs 18.68 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the W10 with all-wheel drive and automatic transmission.
