Speaking on the occasion, Michael Mayer, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars said, “The Beetle is an iconic car that has scripted automotive history for over six decades, and we are delighted to announce the India launch of the 21st Century Beetle. Carrying forward its unmistakably timeless charm, blended with modern day technological sophistication, the 21st Century Beetle now comes with rounded yet masculine proportions and a host of refined, irresistible internal and exterior features. We are confident of continuing the Beetle’s legacy in India and we believe that the biggest addition to the 21st Century Beetle is the element of unlimited ‘fun’.”
Unlike the previous generation model, this new Beetle draws inspiration from the older Kafer. The new Beetle gets a long bonnet with new set of headlight units which also incorporates the LED Daytime Running Lights. Towards the rear, the bug gets beautiful curvy lines with a prominent spoiler on the tailgate.
The new Beetle is wider and longer as compared the predecessor which indicates a much roomier interior. With body coloured interior panels on the dashboard gives it a nice cool appeal. On the tech front, the steering, centre console and the instrumentation are all modernised.
Under the hood, the Beetle is powered by a 1.4-litre four-cylinder TSI petrol engine which churns out an impressive 148PS of power. Power will be transmitted to the front wheels via a 7-speed DSG gearbox. The carmaker claims the engine to be 35 per cent more fuel efficient despite of producing more power as compared to the previous model.
The new Beetle will be available in 4 new exciting colours - Habanero Orange, Oryx White, Tornado Red and Blue Silk. The 21st Century Beetle is available at select Volkswagen India outlets across India. The Beetle will be go up against the likes of the Mini Cooper 3-door and the Fiat 500 Abarth.
