[Update: TVS has launched the Jupiter 125 in India at Rs 74,300 onwards (ex-showroom Delhi). For the specifications, variant-wise pricing and features, read our launch story]
We had earlier reported in this news story that TVS was gearing up for its latest offering, and now we have a confirmed launch date. The Hosur-based company will launch its 125cc two-wheeler on October 7. But, unfortunately, there’s no word on what the offering would be.
But going by TVS’ earlier plans, we reckon it will be a traditional family 125cc scooter (likely to be called Jupiter 125) designed to take on veterans like the Suzuki Access 125 and Honda Activa 125. However, this is only a speculation, and we must remember that the company had earlier filed a trademark for the name ‘Retron’. Though the name’s more suited for a bike (an old-school commuter, in this case), it could be used for a scooter as well.
Moreover, TVS already has a 124.8cc 3-valve motor from the NTorq available for use. But it’s possible that the new two-wheeler, presumed to be a family-oriented scooter, might use a different engine tune for improved fuel efficiency. The engine map of the standard BS6 NTorq would make sense; it currently puts out 9.38PS and 10.5Nm.
A 125cc commuter bike is possible, but that wouldn’t make a lot of sense as the company recently launched the Raider, which also competes in the 125cc segment.
We should have more clarity on the upcoming offering next week, so keep following this space.
