Yamaha has filed approval documents for a 2022 R15.
Documents also reveal a new variant, called the R15M, probably inspired by the Yamaha R1M name.
Both bikes will continue to use the same 155cc single-cylinder motor.
Yamaha Motor India has been on a roll in 2021. First, it gave us the FZ-X, then the FZ 25 MotoGP edition, and recently, the MT-15’s MotoGP edition. But that’s not all, it has now filed approval documents for a new Yamaha R15 and more importantly, an R15M.
We think the R15M will be a sportier variant of the upcoming R15, something on the lines of the YZF R1M with premium components. While details are scarce, we believe it’ll get a new livery, body-coloured alloys and possibly an updated suspension setup with a USD fork up front replacing the telescopic setup. We feel the R15M could be a more premium and focused variant meant for more serious riders.
Moreover, only a month ago, two R15-like testing mules were spotted in India. The test mules appeared more muscular and featured an all-new Yamaha R7-inspired fascia along with a beefy USD fork up front. Now, with these leaked documents in the picture, we can’t help but wonder whether those mules were indeed the new R15s.
Along with the names, the approval documents have given away some of its specifications too. Surprisingly, the power output has been listed at 18.35PS (0.25PS lower than R15 V3’s power), meaning the 155cc engine has been slightly detuned this time around. However, the bike remains as is dimensionally, with the same wheelbase, length, width and height.
We expect Yamaha to launch the new R15s during the festive season, possibly around Diwali, at a premium of around Rs 6,000 - Rs 7,000 over the current R15 V3. Stay tuned on ZigWheels for all the updates.
