The current-gen premium MPV on sale in India was replaced by the new model globally in 2020
  • The new model, which is based on a new platform, is bigger than the outgoing model in all dimensions.

  • Updates include significant changes to the exterior and interior as well as additional features.

  • We expect the new model to retain the 2.2-litre diesel engine that puts out 202PS.

  • It is likely to be offered at a premium over the outgoing model.

Kia is planning on bringing the new-gen Carnival to India, possibly in 2022. Kia India’s Executive Director and Chief Sales and Business Strategy Officer, Tae-Jin Park, said, “We are seriously considering what is the right time to bring the new-generation Carnival to the Indian market.” The new-gen version of the MPV was introduced in other markets in June 2020.

The new-gen model is based on a new N3 platform, resulting in a car that is longer (5,155mm) by 40mm, wider (1,995mm) by 10mm, and taller (1,775mm) by 20mm than the model currently sold here. The new Carnival’s wheelbase (3,090mm) is longer by 30mm, too. Like its predecessor, the upcoming version too is expected to be offered in 7-, 8-, and 9-seater layouts.

In terms of design, it sees quite a few noticeable updates. It gets sharper edges all around, a revised front fascia, new alloy wheels, and connected tail lights. In profile, the most significant design change is around the C-pillar. The upright stance also gives it a more SUV-esque look.

The changes carry on to the interior as well with a larger touchscreen infotainment display, rotary gear selector, revised digital instrument cluster, and a new steering wheel. The climate control panel sees a change too. The basic layout is reminiscent of a Mercedes.

As far as features are concerned, the new Carnival sees an interesting addition. The front row occupants can now keep an eye on the rear passengers via a camera that displays the feed on the infotainment. The new model also gets added safety in the form of lane keep assist, blind spot detection, forward collision avoidance assist, and highway driving assist.

While it is highly unlikely that any of these features will make it to the India-spec version, we can expect the latest version of the UVO connected car tech and additional wireless chargers. It should retain the existing model’s standout features, including rear electric sliding doors, 10.1-inch rear entertainment touchscreen displays, tri-zone climate control, and a 10-way powered driver’s seat.

We reckon the updates will be limited to cosmetic changes. It will probably utilise the same powertrain as the outgoing Carnival: a 202PS/440Nm 2.2-litre diesel unit, paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The 294PS 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine that is offered overseas is unlikely to be offered in India.

Expect the upcoming model to be priced at a premium over the current version which retails from Rs 24.95 lakh to Rs 33.95 lakh (ex-showroom). The luxurious people mover’s pricing and utility put it in contention with the Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner, and the Toyota Innova.
