In 2015 Mercedes-Benz launched the GLE in India, which follows the brand's new naming convention. At the core, it was the M-Class previously sold as ML, but renamed and slightly reworked to plug the gap between the GLC and the GLS. The GLE you see in these spy shots is the next generation of the SUV based on the new Modular High Architecture (MHA) platform designed for tall body styles. Overall, the profile looks like a bulkier GLC thanks to the slanting rear end. The wrap-around taillights further strengthen that GLC vibe.

Spy shots also surfaced earlier this year revealing parts of the new dashboard design including the two 12.3-inch LCD setup similar to what we see in the international E-Class. One of the screens serves as the cockpit display while the other handles infotainment duties. The India-spec E-Class skips the digital display of instrument cluster for a pair of traditional dials.

On the powertrain side, the India-spec GLE will benefit from the brand new 2.0-litre diesel engine that's about to make its debut with the E-Class E 220 d. The 9-speed automatic is likely to be carried over to the next generation as well.

As the pressure to meet stricter emission norms mounts on all auto manufacturers, Mercedes-Benz too may opt for the hybrid tech. The 2019 GLE is also expected to be one of the first cars to switch to the 48V electrical system. The move helps iron out the discrepancies between the batteries juicing the motor and those powering everything else.

Driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, etc. will also become part of the car's standard safety kit.

The new GLE is still in early prototype stages and is expected to go on sale internationally by the end of 2018 as a 2019 model-year car. We might see the new GLE land on our shores in about two years with a bunch of feature omissions.
