Nissan India has discontinued the Terrano in the country and it is unlikely to be replaced with a newer version anytime soon. The Terrano is essentially a rebadged version of the Renault Duster with plenty of cosmetic enhancements to differentiate the two. We feel the Terrano’s poor sales figures could have been the reason behind Nissan’s decision to discontinue the SUV.
While the Duster is still relevant today thanks to constant updates by Renault, the Terrano felt lost in the face of fresh competition like the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300. Another reason for the discontinuation of the Terrano could be due to BS6 emission norms. Upgrading the Terrano to meet stringent emission standards would have required a huge investment. And considering the Terrano’s underwhelming sales numbers, achieving return on investment could be a task for the carmaker.
The Nissan Terrano came with two engine options: a 1.5-litre petrol unit and a 1.5-litre diesel option. The petrol engine developed 104PS and 148Nm while the diesel motor was offered in two states of tune: 85PS/200Nm and 110PS and 245Nm. The petrol engine was offered with a 5-speed manual transmission. On the other hand, the 85PS diesel engine came with a 5-speed MT while the 110PS utilised a 6-speed manual transmission or an AMT.

Now that the Terrano has been axed in the Indian market, the void left by it will be filled by Nissan’s upcoming sub 4-metre SUV. The upcoming model could be called the Magnite. You can read more about it here. Just like the Terrano, the upcoming SUV’s main rivals include the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300.
