Isuzu was largely known only in the commercial space in the Indian market. But, the D-Max V-Cross changed that and made it a renowned brand even in the passenger segment, especially among adventure seekers. Now that Isuzu has some traction in the market, it is all set to re-enter the premium SUV segment with the MU-X on May 11, 2017. The last premium SUV from Isuzu was the MU-7, which found hardly any buyers in the country. But, the MU-X is more premium than the MU-7 and should do better in the market as well. It will rival the likes of the Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner in the country.
If the MU-X looks familiar to you, then it's not deja vu as it is essentially a rebadged Chevrolet Trailblazer. Based on the D-Max V-Cross, the MU-X looks identical to the international version of the pickup from the front and different from that of the Trailblazer. From the side though, it is hard to differentiate the MU-X and the Trailblazer as they look almost identical with a signature wrap-around tail glass. At the rear too, the MU-X remains identical to the Trailblazer, save for a different taillight cluster, a spoiler and a shark fin antenna.
On the outside, the MU-X features Bi-LED projector headlamps with LED daytime running LEDs and LED light guide. The LED treatment has also been given to the taillight cluster which features LED elements. The SUV runs on 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin largely resembles the one on the Trailblazer and the D-Max V-Cross. It gets a dual-tone, black and beige cabin and to make it feel premium, the SUV gets soft-touch materials and some faux wood inserts. In terms of features, it gets an 8-inch touchscreen which runs Isuzu’s iConnect infotainment system. This system has built-in navigation capability along with air mirroring and other usual connectivity options.
In terms of dimensions, the MU-X is 4,825mm long (67mm lesser than the Endeavour and 30mm more than the Fortuner), 1,860mm wide(On par with the Endeavour, and 5mm wider than the Fortuner), and 1,825mm tall (12mm and 10mm shorter than the Endeavour and the Fortuner, respectively). In terms of wheelbase, the MU-X is 2,845mm long which is 5mm shorter than the Endeavour but a whole 100mm longer than the Fortuner. The ground clearance of the MU-X is 230mm, which is 5mm more than that of the Endeavour.
The the MU-X is expected to be powered by a 3.0-litre Ddi diesel engine which produces 177PS of power and 380Nm of torque. Mated to this engine will be either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, sending power to the rear wheels along with an optional four-wheel-drive. Expect the Isuzu MU-X to be priced around the Rs 25 lakh mark.
