Seems like the electric vehicle segment is attracting tech giants like moths to a light, as another name has entered the fray. This time, it’s Chinese smartphone maker Oppo, with reports suggesting they’re looking at building their own vehicles.
Oppo CEO Tony Chen said in the report, “Even in car manufacturing, we will focus on areas that OPPO can perform well. If automakers can’t build good cars and OPPO has the strength, we will try it in the future.” The report also claims Tony Chen has met Tesla’s supplier and battery maker CATL.
It is yet to be seen whether Oppo enters the EV segment as software support to carmakers or builds its own model. As for other tech giants, Apple looks close to joining hands with LG-Magna for its self-driven EV. Xiaomi has announced plans to invest USD 10 billion into the EV sector over the next 10 years. Huawei has technically entered the EV segment with the SERES SF5, as the smartphone maker provides the software for the EV.
Of course, all this has to be taken with a grain of salt, as nothing is concrete. But there are some small hints that these reports are believable, as Oppo has been patenting unmanned driving tech, camera systems, and other pieces of technology found on cars.
Established carmakers may want to start watching their backs soon.
