Piaggio Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. (PVPL), a 100 per cent subsidiary of Italian auto major Piaggio Group, expanded its light commercial vehicle (LCV) range by launching the Porter 700 in India today. It is priced at Rs 3.18 lakh (ex-showroom Maharashtra) and is available in a single trim level only. PVPL has placed it between the Porter 600 and Porter 1000 models.
As per Piaggio, the Porter 700 complements the company’s strategy of progressive growth in the country. This growth, it says, revolves around knowing and meeting customer demands. The new product is developed specifically to cater to the last-mile transportation category.
Powering the Porter 700 is a 652cc, single-cylinder diesel engine that produces a modest 14.75PS of power and 40Nm of torque. The power is harnessed via a 5-speed manual transmission and is sent to the rear wheels. The setup is good enough to return 26kmpl, which is expected to be one of the top highlights in the sales pamphlet. Other standout features include a class-leading ground clearance of 218mm and a payload capacity of 700kgs, thanks to a 30 sq. ft. cargo deck.
At the launch event, Ravi Chopra, chairman of PVPL explained the company’s new initiative by saying, “Piaggio would continue to provide technological solutions in the last mile transportation market and would focus on further strengthening & dominating this category particularly the last mile transportation cargo market. The 3 wheeles & 4 wheelers will continue to co-exist.”
The Porter 700 comes with a 2 years and 75,000km extended warranty. The first 12 months of warranty will be covered by the company itself and the next 12 will be covered by an authorised third party. Moreover, the first four services are free of cost.
The company confirmed that by the end of June 2017, 60 per cent of its dealers across the country will have the Porter 700 in stock. Piaggio is also working hard to increase its dealership network in India, which stands strong at 350 plus.
