As automotive enthusiasts, we look forward to every development in the industry at all times. Some of them are worth remembering (Jeep brand in India) and some are worth waiting for (year-end discounts). However, there are a few developments we don't like (delay in launch of Ignis and Baleno RS). One of such developments are the announcements made by carmakers of increasing their products' prices. While we know these announcements are inevitable as raw material costs and other factors (increased foreign exchange prices) lead to this, a market is a dynamic and necessitates certain moves. With that said, here's a roundup of all the price hike announcements made till date by carmakers:
Toyota
The Japansese automaker is quite popular in India, despite the fact that its most popular cars' base prices begin above Rs 10 lakh, putting them out of reach for a lot of buyers. That aside, Toyota said it would hike the prices of all its cars on sale in India by up to 3 per cent from January 1, 2017 onward. The automaker has attributed the price hike to increased manufacturing cost and foreign exchange rates which continue to climb.
Hyundai
The Korean automaker, and the second largest carmker of India, announced a price hike across its product range come January 2017. The hike would range up to Rs 1,00,000. It has blamed the price hike on rising input costs, varying forex rates and increase in marketing expenses. In 2016, Hyundai brought the new Elantra and Tucson to India. Perhaps, in 2017, we will get to see the new Verna.
Tata Motors
India's own Tata Motors announced that its cars will become dearer by Rs 5,000 -- Rs 25,000 (depending on model) from January 1, 2017. What is not known is by how much the cost of its popular models like the Tiago will increase. Also, by how much the price of its people's car the Nano will increase is unknown. Tata is gearing up for the launch of the Hexa in January next year.
Isuzu
Isuzu has just two vehicles in its lineup for now and both are pick-up trucks. 2016 was a great year for the company as it opened a new plant in Andhra Pradesh and launched the D-Max V-Cross lifestyle pick-up truck. It has announced a price hike of 3-4 per cent for the D-Max V-Cross and D-Max S-Cab, effective from January 1, 2017. Isuzu is also looking to increase its product lineup by bringing the MU-X SUV to India soon.
Chevrolet
Chevrolet, the carmaker from the US, will be hiking prices of all of its models from January 1 next year by 1-3 per cent. The price hike will vary from model to model and variant to variant. Chevrolet has several launches planned for India in the near future and the Essentia sedan, facelifted Trailblazer SUV and Cruze sedan are among them.
Honda Cars
Honda announced increase in prices across its lineup by up to 3 per cent. It has blamed rising input costs and fluctuating exchange rates for increasing its products' costs. Honda, in 2016, brought the Accord Hybrid in India as a CBU. The Indian masses are eagerly awaiting the launch of the Civic in India and perhaps in 2017, Honda just might bring it to India. The City sedan is also expected to get a facelift in 2017.
Mercedes Benz
Mercedes Benz has also announced price revision of its lineup in India. The prices of its products will become dearer by up to 2 per cent from the first day of January 2017. The price hike will vary across the company's vehicle range. The German automaker stated in its official release that the price hike is a result of inflation, rising input costs, and forex rates. In 2016, the GLC became the first 'Made in India' product from Mercedes Benz to be on sale in the country.
Nissan
Nissan sells cars in India under Nissan and Datsun brand names. It has announced a price increase of up to Rs 30,000 January 1 onward. The price hike will affect cars under Nissan and Datsun umbrellas.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen has announced a price hike across its product lineup which will be effective from January 1, 2017. The prices will be hiked by up to 3 per cent and will vary from model to model and trim to trim. Among the cars affected by this price hike are the Ameo compact sedan and the limited-run Polo GTi hot hatchback.
