Tata Motors had showcased the Kite 5 (Update 9/02/2017: model now called Tata Tigor), a compact sedan at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo, that is based on the recently launched Tiago hatchback. New images of the compact sedan in its production guise without any camouflage have surfaced on the Internet. Code-named the Kite 5, Tata will be launching the new offering later this year.
Looking at the images, the Kite 5 is almost identical to the Tiago till the C-pillar from where it sprouts a boot. The tail section has been incorporated well, with the car featuring wrap-around tail lamps and an LED high-mounted stop lamp. Inside, the Kite 5 has interiors identical to the Tiago. The spy images are likely to be of the top-spec variant, disclosing information of features such as climate control, rear armrest and reverse camera.
In terms of firepower, the Kite 5 will be powered by the same petrol and diesel engines that are used in its hatchback sibling. While the petrol is a 1.2-litre three-cylinder motor, the diesel is a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine. Both engines come mated to a five-speed manual transmission.
When launched, the Kite 5 will make its place between the Tiago and the Zest in Tata’s current product portfolio. The compact sedan currently does not face any competition in the market apart from the Chevrolet Essentia that was also showcased at the Expo.
