Land Rover has pulled the veils off its first armoured vehicle christened – the Range Rover Sentinel. Built by the carmaker’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) this high security edition vehicle is capable of protecting its occupants from almost everything the enemies can throw at it, including the swarming bullets and bombs.

Based on the standard wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography, the Sentinel version receives VR8 level certification. The Range Rover Sentinel can withstand 7.62mm high-velocity, armour piercing incendiary bullets. It also boasts exceptional lateral protection against up to 15kg TNT blasts and also provides defense against DM51 grenade explosions from beneath the floor as well as from above the roof.

Inside, the Range Rover Sentinel receives a specially-developed six-piece armoured passenger cell which is made up of super-high-strength steel. The standard glass has been replaced by multi-laminated armour privacy glass of optical quality. Other special features include an anti-tamper exhaust, a self-sealing fuel tank, auxiliary back-up battery, a split charging system and run flat inserts in the tyres which allow the vehicle to be driven even if the tyres are deflated.

There is also a 100mm opening in the driver’s window for document delivery. Optional protection features include under floor and under bonnet fire suppression systems, a customer configurable siren system, emergency service lights and an external speaker system to address people outside the vehicle.

To cope with the added weight, the Sentinel has an upgraded suspension, with Land Rover claiming that it delivers the same ride comfort, handling and off-road capability as non-armoured Range Rovers. The SUV also boasts of 380mm front and 365mm rear ventilated disc brakes, both with high-density pads.

This new SUV is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine which churns out 335PS of power. The engine is mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Range Rover Sentinel is priced at Rs 2.8 crore (before taxes and import duties) and is set to go on sale in the international market this month.
