The French car firm, Renault, is currently one of the fastest growing automakers in India. Its blockbuster products like the Duster SUV and the Kwid hatchback have taken the automotive industry by storm with their outlandish designs in their respective segments. Both the models have helped the Indian arm of the French carmaker to strengthen its roots in the market. Come 2017 however, the Kwid-maker is expected to launch the Kaptur SUV which will compete with the likes of Mahindra XUV500 and the upcoming Tata Hexa.

But before it is launched in India, Renault will put it into production in Brazil. The French automaker has unveiled the Kaptur SUV in the ongoing Sao Paulo Motor Show. It shares its underpinnings with the Duster SUV but with a host of more premium interiors and features, it will be placed a segment above the Duster. In terms of design, the Kaptur surely is a head turner. It has an imposing front with a big Renault logo in the centre, projector headlamps and C-shaped LED daytime running lights. On the sides, it gets rough-and-tough plastic cladding with matte finish, 204mm of ground clearance and 17-inch alloy wheels.

In terms of dimensions, it measures 4,333mm in length, 1,813mm in width and 1,613mm in height. As compared to the Duster, the Kaptur is 18mm longer, 82mm shorter and 9mm narrower. Since both the cars share the same skeleton, the wheelbase is exactly the same at 2,674mm. Inside the cabin, the Kaptur sets itself apart from the Duster with premium materials. The dashboard design is simple yet refreshing with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display which includes satellite navigation.

Although the Brazil-spec will get different engines, the India-spec Kaptur will most likely feature the same 1.5-litre diesel mill that does duty under the hood of the Duster, albeit in a different state of tune to pump out more power. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be offered, depending on the variant chosen. The top-of-the-line variant of the Kaptur might also receive a four-wheel-drive system to make the package all-the-more exciting.
