Royal Enfield has set a new sales record with its much-anticipated Classic 500 Pegasus limited edition model which went on sale on its website at 4PM on June 25. The Chennai-based bike manufacturer sold out all 250 units of the motorcycle earmarked for India in just 178 seconds. Royal Enfield had initially schedule the online sale for July 10, but due to the “overwhelming response” it garnered, the manufacturer’s website crashed. Priced at Rs 2.40 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the Pegasus 500 is the most expensive offering from the company to date.
The limited-edition motorcycle was sold on a first-come-first-serve basis. Limited to 1000 units worldwide, the Classic 500 Pegasus is inspired by the legendary ‘Flying Flea’, a lightweight tactical motorcycle used in World War II. It was known to be mobile enough to be carried over obstacles and could be air-dropped as well. However, its modern iteration is relatively elephantine. Despite sporting only visual changes, the motorcycle’s record sales speaks volumes about enthusiasts’ fervour for the brand.
The motorcycle gets vintage touches like the Pegasus emblem and stencilled numbers on the fuel tank, leather strap on the air filter box, a pair of canvas panniers and blacked out exhaust, rims, kickstart lever, pedals and headlight bezel. Mechanically, it is the same motorcycle as the regular Classic 500. Here’s Royal Enfield’s statement about the record sale:
