Responding to a tweet, Skoda India’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Zac Hollis, has confirmed that the new sedan will be priced more than the Rapid. Much like the fourth and fifth-gen Honda City, the new sedan from Skoda could be sold alongside the Rapid.

That aside, here’s what we know about the Rapid’s replacement. It is expected to arrive by Diwali 2021, following the launch of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos-rivalling Kushaq SUV. It will be bigger than the Rapid and based on the VW Group’s localised version of the MQB-A0 platform, which also underpins the Kushaq. Like the Octavia, the new sedan will be a notchback, which means it will get a liftback tailgate.

The new sedan could borrow the Rapid’s 1.0-litre TSI engine generating 110PS and 175Nm. An optional 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine (from the Kushaq) could be provided as well. The unit will likely be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic.

Skoda could call its new sedan ‘Slavia’, a name that the Czech carmaker trademarked just last year. Currently, the Rapid retails from Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 13.29 lakh (ex-showroom), and its replacement could be priced from Rs 10 lakh onwards. The new sedan will compete with the Rapid’s rivals, including the Vento’s replacement, Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.
