SsangYong Rexton W launched

What you see before you isn’t the Rexton that Mahindra showcased at the Auto Expo in Delhi, but in fact the newer third generation Rexton W that was unveiled by the Mahindra Group for the first time at the 2012 Busan Motor Show at Bexco on May 24, and has now been officially launched in India becoming the first premium SUV offering from the SsangYong group to be introduced on Indian soil.

The Rexton W continues the legacy of Ssangyong’s flagship Rexton SUV and here in India the vehicle will sell as both a 5-speed manual version with Torque on Demand and a 5-speed automatic with all-wheel-drive capability.

The new Ssangyong Rexton W SUV (Read : SsangYong Rexton W Photo Feature) that will be sold and serviced at Mahindra's dealerships only is a modern and luxurious SUV offering from the South Korean UV maker. Projector headlamps, chrome radiator grills, LED tail lamps, stainless steel beltline are among the many nice touches that make this Rexton’s exteriors a rather classy affair.

Manufactured and assembled at Mahindra’s Chakan Plant near Pune by sourcing components from SsangYong Korea and from India the new Rexton is packed to the hilt with gadgets and other comfort features.

A 6-inch Infotainment System with GPS navigation, a fully automatic climate control system, 3 preset memory function for the driver’s seat and ORVMs, an Electric sunroof with tilt/open function, Cruise control and many more such high-end features that would surely attract a more premium SUV class of buyers.

SsangYong Rexton W launched

There’s a 2,696cc capacity XDi270 diesel mill on the new Rexton W that makes 186.5PS @ 4000rpm while torque peaks at 402Nm between 1600-3000rpm on the Rexton RX7 which is the more powerful of the two variants. The RX5 version gets a slightly detuned version of the same inline-5 cylinder engine that produces 164.25PS @4000rpm and 340 Nm of torque between 1800-3250 rpm.

An ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 12.4kmpl for the RX5 model and 11.8kmpl for the RX7 model isn’t too bad for a car with a kerb weight of 2760 kg. With a claimed top speed of 194 km/hr on the RX7 and 180 km/hr on the RX5 spec model means that the BS IV compliant Rexton W is no slouch either.

The list of safety features on the new Rexton W (Read : SsangYong Rexton W Photo Feature) includes an Electronic Stability Program (ESP), 4 Airbags (front and side), an Anti-lock Brake System, Hill Descent Control, Anti Slip regulation and Active Rollover Protection.

Speaking on the launch, Dr. Pawan Goenka, President, Automotive & Farm Equipment Sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. & Chairman, SsangYong Motor Company, said, “The launch of the SsangYong Rexton by Mahindra is a proud moment in our automotive journey. It bears testimony, not only to the world class technologies that are now available across the group, but to the completion of a dream at Mahindra to straddle the entire product spectrum in the SUV segment with a diverse portfolio of offerings at distinctive price points and value.”

Priced at Rs 17.67 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) for the RX5 MT (TOD) variant and Rs 19.67 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai) for the higher spec RX7 AT (AWD), this new seven-seater from SsangYong Motors is sure to stir things up in the country’s premium SUV segment.

Available in four colours, Satin White, Moondust Silver, Volcano Black, and Opulent Purple the new SsangYong Rexton is now open for bookings at Mahindra dealerships in NCR and Mumbai and will soon be followed by other cities in a phased manner.
