Tata Nano AMT launch on May 19

Tata Motors will launch the Nano GenX with the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) on May 19. While the big draw is the affordable automated gearbox, the Nano also gets a functional bootlid which increases storing capacity by an extra 94 litres in the AMT. The manual transmission Nano also gets the rear opening hatch and the smaller gearbox unit frees up 110 litres in its boot.

As for the AMT gearbox, it is a five speed unit mated to the two cylinder 624cc engine that develops 38PS of power and 51Nm of torque. It should appeal to the first time car buyer looking for the convenience of an automatic at an affordable price point. Hydraulic actuators control the clutch and gearshift for an otherwise manual gearbox underneath. Gearshifts however are slow and low torque available at a narrow torque band makes the Nano AMT a lethargic hatchback. Good to potter around town but not one for a quick zip.

As far as the GenX Nano’s appearance goes, Tata Motors has done a good job of to make it more attractive than before. Smoked headlamps, a new bumper with a smiling design for the grille and two foglamps at each end. Changes to the rear besides the opening hatch are the exhaust tip that now moves to the left from the centre and a stronger C-pillar to improve structural rigidity.

The GenX Nano gets a new steering wheel, chrome outlines for the AC vents and new instrumentation. The top end Nanos also get front power windows, Bluetooth telephony and a rear parcel tray with integrated speakers.

Expect the GenX Nano to be priced under Rs 3 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi for the top end XTA variant.
