It took 20 odd days and strong determination for Dr. Varun Vagish to drive his Tata Nano for a gruelling 7,000km to reach the Base Camp of Siachen Glacier in Ladakh – the highest battlefield on the face of earth!
This car enthusiast embarked on this adventurous journey from his home town in Asansol, West Bengal and drove up north and crossing Khardong La the World's highest motorable pass situated at 18,380 feet.
According to Dr. Vagish, despite the torturous drive, the Tata Nano proved to be a reliable companion throughout the journey. He said, "Being a rear wheel drive car, Tata Nano was a mobile powerhouse while climbing the steep inclines of the highest mountain passes. Lowest turning radius also helped me to easily manoeuvre the vehicle on sharp curves.”
The doctor claims to have driven the compact hatchback Nano for over 800km in a day at few instances, when the roads were more forgiving. The Tata Nano took just about 30 minutes to climb the last 16 kilometres stretch from North-Pulu to Khardung-la. In his Tata nano, the doctor drove via many other prominent mountain passes such as Chang La, Zozi La, Fotu La and Namik La, fighting extreme weather condition and unforgiving terrain.
