Prior to its official unveil in December, Tata Motors christened its Kite hatchback as Zica. Unfortunately, Tata was forced to rename their upcoming offering as coincidentally it shared the name with a virus that has affected million of people in South America. Soon after the car maker decided to rename the Zica, they launched a website where the public was asked to vote for the name they like. With the contest, Tata was able to narrow down to three names – Civet, Adore and Tiago. Of these three, Tiago has finally been chosen now. Interestingly, Tata Motors' brand ambassador Lionel Messi's son's name is Thiago.
Set to replace the aging Indica, the Tiago will be launched in petrol as well as diesel variants. It makes 85PS of power and 114Nm of torque from a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol mill. Unlike the Zest and the Bolt, the Tiago will be naturally aspirated and not turbocharged. The Tiago will also come with an all-new 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbo diesel that makes 70PS and 140Nm. Both these engines come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
Tata Motors was expected to launch the car in January but was forced to postpone it due to the naming issue. With the car now renamed as the Tiago, they are expected to launch it in a month’s time. The Tata Tiago will go against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio and the Hyundai i10.
