The Goodwood Festival of Speed is one of the premier international events which allows fans to see the best cars in the world better than most motor shows. This year’s event, celebrating its 25th anniversary, had a significant Indian presence including that of a potential future supercar - the Vazirani Shul Inspire Gran Turismo Concept.
Developed by Mumbai-headquartered, California-based Vazirani Automotive, the concept has the backing of many international brands including the Gran Turismo video game, Michelin tyres and the Force India Formula 1 team. In fact, some reports suggest that Kazunori Yamauchi, the head honcho of Polyphony Digital (the developers of the Gran Turismo video games), himself had a hand in finalising the design of this futuristic looking super/hypercar. Yamauchi has previously helped Nissan design the multi-function centre display in the R35 GT-R.
Details about the Vazirani Shul are all hearsay for now, with no official details released by the company at the time of publishing the story. On the company’s YouTube page, it describes the Shul as “an aerodynamically enhanced elegant design paired with a Micro Jet Turbine Electric powertrain to deliver a spiritual automotive experience of restrained power, eternal beauty and quiet eminence.”
Reports suggest that the sharp-looking supercar is based on a carbon-fibre chassis, including a complete carbon-fibre tub. The basic powertrain consists of four electric motors powered by a battery that weighs in at a claimed 300kg. The big talking point though is that the Shul will have a range-extending engine in the form of a microturbine.
This is not the first time that cars have been designed with micro-turbine propulsion tech, the last famous car to have used it was another concept car - the Jaguar C-X75. Micro-turbines have the advantage of being able to run on multiple fuels, are more efficient at operating speeds, are less expensive to maintain and less polluting too. That said, initial costs and noise levels are a concern.
While no concrete plans for the production version of the Shul have been revealed, company founder Chunky Vazirani hopes real-world tests for the first prototype will begin later in 2018. While there’s certainly interest in the concept, and hope that it will be a good representation of the automotive talent in India, more details are required before the car can be termed more than just vapourware.
