Audi has revealed the midlife facelift of the A4. Yes, it is over three-years old now! It’s not like the A4 needed a lot of changes, as they say ‘why fix something that ain’t broken?’. But there are some subtle ones made for the 2019 MY. Here are some side-by-side shots to help you spot them.
The headlamps, with the unique kink, have been carried over as has almost everything else at the front, including the signature hexagonal grille. The big (small?) change here is the new grille which looks 'sportier' now.
The new alloy wheel design is also very obvious, but the 19-inch units seen here may not be offered in India. At the rear, the changes to the Audi A4 include the new bumper which gets a black mesh-like insert between the reflectors, more noticeable faux air diffusers and new quadrilateral exhausts instead of the circular ones on the older car. There’s also that blink-and-you’ll-miss-it kind of change - notice the black boot lip spoiler?
The changes you see on the outside here are part of what Audi calls the ‘S line competition’ package. This is sportier than the ‘S line’ package currently offered to A4 Premium Plus and Technology variants buyers in India. The competition package includes sporty looking additions to the bumper - new air-inlet surrounds, wedge-shaped inserts on the front bumper, 19-inch wheels, red brake calipers, sport suspension, embossed Audi logo on the rear doors and, of course, the darker Turbo Blue paint.
There are no changes on the inside for the standard models. However, the S line competition pack adds carbon inlays, a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, partial leather sport seats with the option of fitting S sport seats in bright colours.
Audi has not announced any mechanical changes for the A4. In India you can get it with either a 2.0-litre 190PS/400Nm diesel engine or a 1.4-litre 150PS/250Nm petrol engine paired to 7-speed DCTs. Rivals for the A4 include the Jaguar XE, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class which is due for an update in October 2018 and the BMW 3 Series. Expect the 2019 Audi A4 to be launched in India by early next year.
